Program Notes:
This dance performance was created in collaboration with the artists whose work is presented in the gallery. For six Mondays, we gathered for Figure Painting and Drawing Sessions at Gallery 202 where I improvised throughout the space. The artists could call “pause” at any moment and I would find stillness within the movement.
In stillness, I paid attention to what was unfolding: my breath, my muscular tone, my senses, the residue left after dancing. I practiced quieting without wandering: staying focused, present, and engaged. I felt the labor of waiting, of composure, of containment. I desired to find freedom and ease by remaining in one place, in making the choice to hold steady. I considered the embodiment of an anchor; I became an anchor.
You are witnessing improvised choreography as I move through a sequence of landmarks: the moments captured in these paintings. It is a journey of arrival, contemplating how to stay with myself, the space, and the audience. It is a practice of presence, being fully here as I inhabit each gesture. I invite you into this experience as a participant. Notice how we hold the space together: creating an ensemble through our shared awareness. Focus on the subtle dance of sitting, standing, being.

Special thanks to Margaret Sue Turner Wright for facilitating this process. Without her strong leadership and organizational capacities, this project would not have been possible. I am internally grateful for her welcoming spirit, passion, and commitment to artistic collaborations.
