I am currently considering submitting materials for a contemporary ballet gig. I would need to submit performance videos, and I realized the only videos I have access do not include any ballet vocabulary. Today I thought I would put together an improvisation based on the aesthetic of ballet. This did not go very well for me. My natural movement inclination does not include ballet despite the fact that ballet was my first dance language. I played around a bunch of different times, trying to come up with movement that felt organic and natural in my body that at the same time showed ballet technique. Again, it did not go very well. If you give me ballet vocabulary, I can embody it. If you ask me to generate....I loose interest. The first video is a collection of my attempts at showing off my technique and extensions. The second video is when I gave up on the ballet idea and decided to explore how movement can continue in my body without stopping. I see a lot of movements that could have continued longer, and were stopped short of their full potential.
